How to File an Auto Insurance Claim in NJ

Filing a claim is easier when you know what information to collect and what questions to ask. Use this guide to organize the first call and prepare for the repair process.

Collect the facts first

Before calling your insurance company, gather the information you have from the accident. Write down the date, time, location, weather, direction of travel, and a short factual description of what happened. Keep the police report number, the other driver’s name and insurance information, witness contacts, and photographs nearby. If your vehicle was towed, note where it was taken and whether storage fees are accumulating. You do not need to create a perfect statement; accurate notes and organized documents are more useful than guessing about details you cannot confirm.

Call the right insurance company

If you were involved in a crash, contact your own carrier as soon as practical and ask how to report the loss. Depending on the facts, coverage, and other driver, there may also be a claim involving the other party’s insurer. Tell the representative that you want to report an accident and ask for a claim number. Confirm the name and contact information of the assigned adjuster, the preferred method for sending photos, and the next step for inspecting the vehicle. Reporting a claim is not the same as agreeing with every decision about fault or repair, so keep your description factual and avoid speculation.

Understand the estimate

An insurance estimate is a starting point for evaluating damage and coverage. It may be written before the vehicle is disassembled, which means hidden damage can be discovered later. Ask whether the initial estimate includes all visible damage, what your deductible is, and how additional repair items will be reviewed. If a shop finds structural damage, sensor damage, or parts that cannot be safely reused, the shop may submit a supplement to the carrier. Keep copies of estimates and compare them with the final repair order so you know what was completed.

Keep a claim file: Save the claim number, adjuster notes, estimates, photos, rental-car information, receipts, and emails in one folder until the repair and payment questions are finished.

Choose your repair facility

Ask questions before selecting a collision shop. You can look for trained technicians, a clear written estimate, repair experience with your vehicle, modern diagnostic tools, and a process for handling supplements. Your insurer may recommend facilities, but you should choose a shop where you feel comfortable with the communication and workmanship. Ask how the shop handles parts, paint matching, calibration, alignment, corrosion protection, and warranty information. A complete repair restores more than the vehicle’s appearance; it should address the systems and structure affected by the collision.

Ask about transportation and timing

Rental-car and transportation benefits vary by policy. Ask the insurance representative how many days or dollars are available, when rental coverage begins, and what happens if hidden damage or a parts delay extends the repair. A shop should keep you informed when the estimate changes, parts arrive, repairs are completed, or a calibration or quality check is still needed. Clear updates help you make decisions before a coverage limit becomes a surprise.

Review the repair before closing the claim

At pickup, walk around the vehicle in good light and ask the shop to explain the final invoice. Check panel alignment, paint appearance, lights, warning indicators, and any items that were discussed during the estimate. Keep the final paperwork, warranty details, and payment receipts. If a concern appears after pickup, contact the shop promptly so it can be documented and addressed.
